In August 2015, the Slovenian industrial band Laibach became the first Western rock group to perform in North Korea. In the above video, Slavoj Žižek examines the political and cultural significance of this unusual event. Ensconced in the installation e-flux video rental (EVR), Žižek remarks that Laibach’s performance was more about “staging the real” of Western capitalist democracy than it was about North Korea itself. This video clip is an excerpt from Liberation Day, the 2016 documentary about Laibach’s visit to North Korea, directed by Ugis Olte and Morten Traavik.
