New low for the mainstreaming of LGBT causes: Rainbow Doritos

As more LGBT folks have gained the right to marry in recent years, some people have lamented the mainstreaming of LGBT life. Whereas homosexual and queer social relations used to have a subversive edge—exposing heteronormativity for the system of domination and control that is it—they have been considerably tamed in recent years by mainstream acceptance. Witness the latest in a long, sad string of corporate gay-washing: Rainbow Doritos. Mashable has the story:

America’s favorite tortilla chip has paired with It Gets Better Project, which provides outreach to LGBT youth, to create a limited edition bag of Doritos with chips in — you guessed it — every color of the rainbow.

The Doritos Rainbows, which Doritos tells Mashable are Cool Ranch flavored, are available exclusively online, where $10 or more gets you a bag of the coveted Doritos.

All funds go directly to the It Gets Better Project, a nonprofit organization whose mission statement is “to communicate to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender youth around the world that it gets better, and to create and inspire the changes needed to make it better for them.”
