MoMA PS1 has announced the artist list for the fourth edition of its signature program Greater New York. This year’s exhibition is curated by Peter Eleey, Curator and Associate Director of Exhibitions and Programs, MoMA PS1; Douglas Crimp, Fanny Knapp Allen Professor of Art History at the University of Rochester; Thomas J. Lax, Associate Curator of Media and Performance Art, The Museum of Modern Art; and Mia Locks, Assistant Curator, MoMA PS1.
While Greater New York has traditionally showcased promising emerging artists working in the New York area, PS1 has apparently scrapped that rubric and will depart “from the show’s traditional focus on youth, instead examining points of connection and tension between our desire for the new and nostalgia for that which it displaces.” What exactly that means remains to be seen, but it reads as an excuse for the curators to do less leg work discovering emerging artists and put all of their favorites into a greatest hits hodgepodge. I’m only vaguely familiar with the curatorial work of Crimp, Eleey, Lax, and Locks, but it seems fairly obvious who picked which artists. (It also seems exceedingly obvious that there wasn’t a senior woman on the curatorial staff.)
My first impression is that there are a lot of great artists on the list, but that the show might be a clusterfuck without a unifying thesis streamlining these curators’ selections. Also, the inclusion of fashion labels like Eckhaus Latta and Slow and Steady Wins the Race seems like an embarrassing overreach to the cool kids, but what can you expect from an institution run by Klaus Biesenbach?
