Raymond Pettibon on JMW Turner

Art and rock and roll legend and noted Twitter commentator Raymond Pettibon was interviewed by the Met about JMW Turner. Pettibon speaks about his admiration for Turner, the original “painter of light,” and their approaches to painting. He says:

“When I do a painting it’s a process of learning with each one rather than cranking them out. The brush can be an extension of the arm and the self, yet you’re still extending yourself. Any Joe Schmoe with an apprenticeship and focus can learn to paint in a way that they could never do a Turner. It’s a basic differences between slickness and really painting. It’s unnerving, it’s dealing with the sublime and nature at it’s highest point.”
