Russian Performance Artist Sets Fire to FSB Entryway

Pyotr Pavlensky, a famous Russian performance artist, was arrested in Moscow after setting fire to the doorway of the Federal Security Service (FSB) office building, Interfax news agency reported Monday.

Pavlensky was detained by security service guards at 3 a.m near the FSB building on Lubyanskaya Ploshchad, at entrance number one. He had used a canister of gasoline and a lighter to ignite the doorway.

@oleksiy_radynski Interesting, I haven’t heard of Pavlensky before. I’m curious to hear about his reputation in the Russian art scene. Is he famous? He kinda seems like a provocateur.

I Google image searched him and his documentation seems very cinematic/theatrical.

I read this article about his work and intentions just last night actually, if you’d like to know more:

@Putley admittedly the URL ending in “nailed-scrotum-red-square” is a bit off putting…!

@karen_archey, petr pavlensky is definitely the most important artistic provocateur in russia now. he is indeed cinematic in many ways - if there’s an issue with a previous URL-ending, check out this one

If you want to know more about protest art in Russia and the Voina group I just finished reading a great book of the prison letters between Pussy Riot’s Nadya Tolokonnikova and Slavoj Žižek, which I recommend. The Guardian have actually posted them online (something tells me they like Russian radicalism!) http://www.theguardian.com/music/2013/nov/15/pussy-riot-nadezhda-tolokonnikova-slavoj-zizek

Another Guardian article had been posted about Pavlensky earlier when he cut off his earlobe:
